Fees on postage and tax

Why postage costs you a fee

Whatnot charges its card fee on everything a buyer pays -- your price, their postage and their tax -- so postage costs you a fee even though the buyer pays the postage itself. Nothing has sold yet, so we assume a typical postage figure and tax. Once you record a real sale you can enter what the buyer actually paid, and the fees stop being an estimate.

Postage. Whatnot charges its card fee on the whole amount a buyer pays -- the item, the postage and the tax -- so postage is part of what you are charged even though the buyer pays it. Where you told us what a buyer actually paid, these fees are exact. Where you did not, we assume a typical postage cost, and the real figure will differ a little.

The price floors on a show plan

These floors assume the postage. Whatnot charges its card fee on everything a buyer pays, postage included, so postage costs you a fee even though the buyer pays it. Nothing has sold yet, so we stand in a typical figure. Your real fees will be a little either side of this, so leave yourself some room above the floor rather than pricing right at it.

What Whatnot keeps of a sale

Whatnot keeps a share of every sale that is higher than the headline 8% + 2.9% because the $0.30 is charged on every single sale, and because processing is calculated on the buyer's sales tax as well as your price -- money that never reaches you. Whatnot charges it on the buyer's postage too, which we do not work out here, so the real figure is a little higher still.

For staff: the figures on a deal

Whatnot charges its card fee on everything the buyer pays, postage included, so these figures assume a typical postage per sale. A student who records what a buyer really paid gets an exact figure instead.

What the buyer paid, when you record a sale

Including postage and tax, straight off Whatnot. Fill it in and the fees are exact; leave it and we estimate the postage.

Sales made somewhere other than Whatnot

Sales made elsewhere use the fee you entered, not one we worked out. We only model Whatnot's fees, so for anywhere else your own number is the one worth trusting -- and nothing taken means nothing taken.
